How the By election unfolds?

The opposition political parties have emerged victorious on 11 seats in the by-elections limiting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies to just three seats. If these victories are a setback for the ruling BJP then it is an impressive show of strength for the Opposition in the by-elections to four Lok Sabha and 10 Assembly seats spreading across 11 states. But will they have any bearing on 2019 Lok Sabha elections?

Political analysts say that these wins could be a major boost for the opposition parties which are gradually uniting in the run-up to the 2019 general elections. Results of these elections appeared slanted against the BJP after taking into account that all the parties that had won these seats before by polls were necessitated. While the BJP alliance retained two Lok Sabha seats -- one in Maharashtra and another in Nagaland -- it failed to retain two others -- UP's Kairana and Maharashtra's Bhandara-Gondiya.

Similarly, in 10 Assembly seats, the BJP and its allies failed to retain seats like Noorpur in UP and Shahkot in Punjab, while the opposition parties such as the Congress, CPM, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Trinamool retained their respective seats. The BJP retained Tharali Assembly seat in Uttarakh.

But amid all these drubbing, the BJP leaders are of the view that by elections and general elections are different. Moreover, these elections would not have any impact either on the central government or the state government anywhere.

The Lok Sabha by-elections result appeared equally divided. The BJP and its ally have one two seats while opposition has also won two Lok Sabha seats. But figures for the 10 Assembly by-polls have come as the big disappointment for the ruling party which could manage to win just one seat in Uttarakhand while the Congress bagged three one each in Meghalaya, Karnataka and Punjab and others got six -- JMM got two in Jharkhand, while CPM, SP, RJD and Trinamool Congress (TMC) got one each in Kerala, UP, Bihar and West Bengal, respectively.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has won Jokihat assembly seat In Bihar by defeating Janata Dal (U’Commenting on the results, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said one has to take two steps backward before a big leap. On being asked about the BJP's performance in these by-elections ahead of next year's general polls, Singh said, "For a massive leap, one always has to go two steps backward."

Punjab's ruling Congress candidate Hardev Singh Ladi wrested the Shahkot assembly seat from the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has hailed the Congress victory as a 'vindication' of the government's people-centric policies.

BJP vs All: Opposition unity emerges

The Congress and regional parties have picked up five each of the 11 Assembly seats up for grabs today, indicating that a larger opposition alliance can challenge the ruling BJP in 2019.

The ascendance of regional parties in these elections will also be a challenge for the Congress, to get the arithmetic right on whether it can be the glue to a combined opposition alliance or whether it should cede space to dominant regional partners in states.

In the 4 Lok Sabha seats that are being counted today, the BJP is neck-and-neck with the Opposition. The bad news is has lost the prestigious Kairana fight in Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP is behind Opposition RLD in the Kairana Lok Sabha seat. The party is significantly ahead in Maharashtra's Lok Sabha seat Palghar but is trailing behind NCP-Congress in Bhandara-Gondia. BJP ally NDPP is leading in the lone Nagaland seat.

In the 11 Assembly seats, regional parties are leading in five, the Congress has won two and leading in three and the BJP is leading in one.

Lok Sabha seats

Kairana, Uttar Pradesh: 

BJP has lost this big prestige battle to the Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal, an influential regional party in the Jat-dominated western Uttar Pradesh. The RLD was the face of a united opposition in Uttar Pradesh, which is helmed by the Samjawadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party. The SP had openly supported the RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan in the campaign to the bypoll. Hasan also claimed that she had the support of Bahujan Samaj party, though party boss Mayawati made no formal announcement of this.

Bhandara-Gondia and Palghar, Maharashtra:

 The fight in Palghar was between the BJP and the Shiv Sena, with the Shiv Sena hoping to find feet after rebelling against big brother BJP. In Bhandara-Gondia, the BJP was up against the coalition of the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress. NCP chief Sharad Pawar has already indicated he is willing to go with the Congress in 2019.

Lone seat in Nagaland: 

Bypoll is taking place here because of the resignation of present Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to contest the Assembly polls. The ruling People's Democratic Alliance in Nagaland has fielded former minister Tokheho Yepthomi. Yepthomi faces opposition Naga People's Front candidate C Apok Jamir.

Kerala's ruling CPI(M)-led LDF's Saji Cheriyan today won the Chengannur Assembly bypoll by a huge margin of 20,956 votes over his nearest Congress rival, officials said.

According to the Chief Electoral Office, Cheriyan polled 67,303 votes while the Congress-led UDF candidate D Vijaykumar got 46,347 votes and BJP's P S Sreedharan Pillai came third with 35,270 votes.

The bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting MLA K K Ramachandran Nair of the CPI(M) in January this year due to illness.

CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishna described the victory as the "achievement" of the two-year rule of the Pinarayi Vijayan led government.

It was also a 'rejection of the soft Hindutva policy' of the Congress, Balakrishnan told reporters here.

Leader of Opposition in the assembly and UDF chairman Ramesh Chennithala attributed the LDF victory to the alleged communal card played by the Left Front.

 വാശിയേറിയ ചെങ്ങന്നൂര്‍ ഉപതെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ എല്‍.ഡി.എഫിന് തകര്‍പ്പന്‍ ജയം. എല്‍.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി സജി ചെറിയാന്‍ 20,956 വോട്ടിന്‍റെ റെക്കോര്‍ഡ് ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തില്‍ മണ്ഡലം നിലനിര്‍ത്തി. ആകെ 67,303 വോട്ട് സജി ചെറിയാന്‍ പിടിച്ചു.

യു.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി ഡി. വിജയകുമാര്‍ രണ്ടാം സ്ഥാനത്തും എന്‍.ഡി.എ സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി പി.എസ്. ശ്രീധരന്‍പിള്ള മൂന്നാം സ്ഥാനത്തും എത്തി. വിജയകുമാറിന് 46,347 വോട്ടും ശ്രീധരന്‍പിള്ള 35,270 വോട്ടും പിടിച്ചു. ഇത്തവണത്തെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ യു.ഡി.എഫ് വോട്ടുനില ഉയര്‍ത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ ബി.ജെ.പി പിന്നിലേക്ക് പോയി.

2016ലെ വോട്ടെടുപ്പില്‍ എല്‍.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി അഡ്വ. കെ.കെ രാമചന്ദ്രന്‍ നായര്‍ നേടിയ 7,983 വോട്ട് ഭൂരിപക്ഷം സജി ചെറിയാന്‍ മൂന്നിരട്ടിയായി വര്‍ധിപ്പിച്ചു. 2016ല്‍ 52,880 വോട്ടാണ് രാമചന്ദ്രന്‍ നായര്‍ ആകെ നേടിയത്.

അതേസമയം, 2016ലെ വോട്ടുനിലയായ 44,897 യു.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി 46,347 ആയി ഇത്തവണ ഉയര്‍ത്തി. എന്നാല്‍, ബി.ജെ.പി വന്‍ പരാജയമാണ് രുചിച്ചത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ തവണ മല്‍സരിച്ച ശ്രീധരന്‍പിള്ളയെ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു ഇത്തവണയും എന്‍.ഡി.എ സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി. 2016ല്‍ 42,682 വോട്ട് നേടിയ ശ്രീധരന്‍പിള്ളക്ക് ഇത്തവണ 35,270 വോട്ട് നേടാനെ കഴിഞ്ഞിള്ളൂ.

ചെങ്ങന്നൂര്‍ നിയോജക മണ്ഡലം ഉള്‍പ്പെടുന്ന മാന്നാര്‍, പാണ്ടനാട്, തിരുവന്‍വണ്ടൂര്‍, മുളക്കുഴ, ആല, പുലിയൂര്‍, ബുധനൂര്‍, ചെന്നിത്തല, ചെറിയനാട്, വെണ്‍മണി എന്നീ 10 പഞ്ചായത്തുകളിലും ചെങ്ങന്നൂര്‍ നഗരസഭയിലും വ്യക്തമായി ഭൂരിപക്ഷം എല്‍.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി നേടാന്‍ സാധിച്ചു.

മാന്നാര്‍-2629, പാണ്ടനാട്-548, തിരുവന്‍വണ്ടൂര്‍-10, മുളക്കുഴ-3637, ആല-866, പുലിയൂര്‍-637, ബുധനൂര്‍-2646, ചെന്നിത്തല-2353, ചെറിയനാട്-2485, വെണ്‍മണി-3203, എന്നിങ്ങനെയാണ് പഞ്ചായത്ത് തിരിച്ചുള്ള എല്‍.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥിയുടെ ലീഡ് നില. ചെങ്ങന്നൂര്‍ നഗരസഭയില്‍ 753 വോട്ടിന്‍റെ ഭൂരിപക്ഷവും എല്‍.ഡി.എഫ് നേടി.

കെ.എം. മാണി പിന്തുണ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിലും കേരളാ കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് -എം ഭരണത്തിലുള്ള തിരുവന്‍വണ്ടൂര്‍ പഞ്ചായത്തിലും യു.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി പിന്നോട്ട് പോയി. ഇവിടെ 10 വോട്ടിന്‍റെ ഭൂരിപക്ഷം സജി ചെറിയാന് ലഭിച്ചു.

പ്രതിപക്ഷ നേതാവ് രമേശ് ചെന്നിത്തലയുടെ വീട് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന ചെന്നിത്തല പഞ്ചായത്തില്‍ പോലും യു.ഡി.എഫിന് ഭൂരിപക്ഷം നേടാനായില്ല. ഇവിടെ എല്‍.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി 2300 വോട്ടിന്‍റെ ഭൂരിപക്ഷം നേടി. അതുപോലെ, ചെന്നിത്തലയുടെ വീടിരിക്കുന്ന ബൂത്തില്‍ സജി ചെറിയാന് 457 വോട്ട് ഭൂരിപക്ഷം കിട്ടി. ഇവിടെ 280 വോട്ടാണ് യു.ഡി.എഫ് സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി വിജയകുമാര്‍ പിടിച്ചത്.

ജനവിധി തേടിയ ചെറിയ പാര്‍ട്ടികളുടെ സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥികള്‍ ആയിരത്തില്‍ താഴെ വോട്ടുകള്‍ നേടി. തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ സെ​ക്കു​ല​ര്‍ നാ​ഷ​ന​ല്‍ ദ്രാ​വി​ഡ് പാ​ര്‍​ട്ടി സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി സ്വാ​മി സു​ഖാ​കാ​ശ​ സ​ര​സ്വ​തി നാലാം സ്ഥാനത്തും നോട്ട അഞ്ചാം സ്ഥാനത്തും എത്തി. 800 വോട്ട് പിടിച്ച സ്വാ​മി സു​ഖാ​കാ​ശ​ സ​ര​സ്വ​തിയാണ് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ വോട്ട് നേടിയ ചെറിയ പാര്‍ട്ടികളുടെ സ്ഥാനാര്‍ഥി. നോട്ടക്ക് 728 വോട്ട്.
